things you will need

The following items from the Craft + Code Starter kit:

  • 1 x Crumble
  • 1 x Battery pack
  • 1 x Sparkle
  • 3 x Red croc leads, 2 x Black croc leads, 1 x Green croc lead, 3 x Yellow croc leads
  • 1 x USB cable

A computer with a USB port and the Crumble software installed.

Plus,

  • A cardboard box
  • 3 x split pins
  • 1 x sheet tracing paper
  • 1 x brown card
  • 1 x white card
  • Scissors
  • Tape

Connect the Crumble to power

Use one red croc lead and one black croc lead to connect the Crumble to the battery pack.

Add the Sparkle

  • Attach one red croc lead, one black croc lead and one green croc lead to the connectors on the right hand side of the Crumble.
  • Attach the croc leads to the connectors on the left hand side of the Sparkle.

Add the Sparkle

  • Attach one yellow croc lead to connector A on the Crumble.
  • Attach one yellow croc lead to connector B on the Crumble.
  • Attach one yellow croc lead to connector C on the Crumble.
  • Attach a split pin to the end of each yellow croc lead.

Add a switch

Attach the remaining red croc lead to a positive terminal (+) on the battery pack.

Connect the Crumble to a computer

Use the USB cable to connect your Crumble circuit to a computer with the Crumble software installed.

Code the first 'feeling'

  • Snap an ‘if-then-else’ block to a ‘program start’ block in the coding space.
  • Tell the Crumble if ‘A is HI’ then set the sparkle to the colour green (mood = happy).

Add more feelings

  • Snap another ‘if-then-else’ block inside the ‘else’ section of your existing code.
  • Tell the Crumble if ‘B is HI’ then set the sparkle to the colour blue (feeling = sad).
  • Snap an ‘if-then’ block inside the remaining ‘else’ section.
  • Tell the Crumble if ‘C is HI’ then set the sparkle to be red (feeling = angry/frustrated).

Set to repeat forever

Place your finished program inside a ‘do forever’ block to repeat the code continuously.

Prepare the box

  • Cut off the flaps from one opening of the box.
  • Open the other end of the box.

Prepare the eye

  • Cut off the flaps from one opening of the box.
  • Open the other end of the box.

Prepare the eye

  • On a piece of brown card, draw around the box (the opening with no flaps).
  • Draw an eye shape on the brown card, in the middle of the box shape.
  • Cut out the eye shape and around the box line.
  • Place white card behind the cut out eye shape.
  • Draw a circle on the white card to mark out the iris (the coloured part of the eye).
  • Cut out the white card to be the same size as the brown card.
  • Cut out a piece of tracing paper to be the same size as the white and brown card.
  • Attach the tracing paper to the back of the brown card and colour in a pupil.
  • Attach the white card to the top of the tracing paper.
  • Turn over to see the finished eye and fix to the box using sticky tape.

Add the pre-programmed Crumble circuit

  • Make three opening for the split pins on the top of the box.
  • Take the split pins off the yellow croc leads (shown as red in this image) and insert them into the box.
  • Reconnect the split pins to the yellow croc leads.
  • Use tape to secure the sparkle so the light is facing through the eye.
  • Place the rest of the circuit inside the box, turn the battery pack on and get ready to test.
Take the loose red croc lead connected to the battery pack and touch each split pin one at a time. Voila. Change the colour of the eye each day depending on how you are feeling.
